Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
